A Deeper Connection

In 2013, Urban Outfitters executed on another tactic within the retailer’s overall customer engagement strategy. The new Urban Outfitters iOS app aimed to reward customer shoppers, through checking-in with the store and tweeting about the brand using specific hashtags.

The app was broken into two sections, “My UO” and “Get Some”. My UO acted as the engagement area that saved your rewards, badges and your Urban Outfitters ID which could be scanned in store vs worrying about an email.

Get Some was where all of the fun challenges were located for customers to complete for rewards. The challenges included things like tweeting about purchases, visiting particular stores, or buying vinyl records. What do the customers earn through all these challenges? Special badges that were available for a limited time, early access to exclusive items, and advance notices on sales. The rewards were as tailored as could be for an individual’s taste and preferences.
